As humorous as some people may find it, chickens can have a big role in improving our society. In recent figures for the UK 870 million British birds are bred, hatched, reared, and slaughtered each year here. There are 36 million layers roughly each year whereby 51% of these eggs were produced in battery cages, 3% in barn systems and 46% in free range systems. Living in a country where the human population is 64 million, is it hard to imagine our country as just having layers in small holdings and distributing locally? That would be 2 laying chickens to every four households. That is believable! It would encourage more veggie patches, a healthier society and cheaper lifestyle! They will even eat all your unwanted scraps decreasing rubbish in the UK and thereby decreasing landfill wastage by an estimated 20%. Even in old people’s homes in the UK they are using back yard chickens to keep the so called ‘hensioners’ occupied, healthy and they have even been talking to children in schools to explain where there food comes from.
